Product Description

When a bus driver takes a break from his route, a very unlikely volunteer springs up to take his place-a pigeon! But you''ve never met one like this before. As he pleads, wheedles, and begs his way through the book, children will love being able to answer back and decide his fate.

In his hilarious picture book debut, popular cartoonist Mo Willems perfectly captures a preschooler''s temper tantrum.

Due to a lack of other material, we decided to make the December issue a sketchbook with just my cartoons. I have been producing small cartoon and story sketchbooks for clients and pals every year since then. Born in the margins of a 1997 notebook filled with potential picture book ideas, he was complaining that his ideas were better than mine. To mollify him, I put him in that year’s sketchbook. was much longer than the final published volume, but some of the lines were the same.
and rejected my picture book ideas. She suggested I revisit my sketchbook with an eye to turning it into a picture book. My wife was working at a school library at the time and had read the sketchbook to her kids, who had enjoyed it. So I suppose it wasn’t too crazy an idea. I started to revise the layout and work with color. after several dozen rejections because the book was “unusual,” an editor decided that “unusual” was a good thing. Plus, it made her laugh. I began reworking and rewriting. The Pigeon was now starting to look more like his mature self. was published in April 2003 and, to my surprise, proved to be popular quite quickly. Thankfully, that Pigeon doodle in the notebook back in 1997 was so insistent. He was right!

I bought this book on a friend''s recommendation, also figuring it was an award winner, but after receiving it and reading it twice, I was bewildered as to why such a mean-spirited book, one in which the only answer is "no, no, no" to a poor pigeon who wants to drive a bus, would ever receive applause. Is it me or the book? I felt bad for the pigeon who so longed to take control of the bus, to have an ounce of power over the direction of things and would never ever never read this to my little grandson. It''s like teaching a kid to take joy in another being''s sorrow and disempowerment. What''s the deal? Why is this book popular? I don''t get it.

What really drew me to this book - other than the fact that it''s a Caldecott Honor Award winner - was knowing the author, Mo Willems, has been a Sesame Street writer and animator, and I have so much respect for the value of that show in finding fun and thought-provoking ways to teach youngsters.

Though we''re giving this book to our 2 year old grandson on his birthday, I wish I''d had it when I was full-time babysitting our 4-1/2 year old grandson at that age! Just love him to pieces, all of that spunk and fire, but - out of our three grandsons - he''s the one who seemed to be "pushing the limits" from Day 1! This is an interactive type of book, beginning with a bus driver telling your child that he has to leave for a bit, asking that your child keep an eye on things while he''s gone and to - above all - "Don''t let the Pigeon drive the bus!" Now what child isn''t going to be immediately drawn into a book that puts HIM/HER in charge?!

Throughout the book (with VERY simple, pale illustrations - not a lot of busyness on each page), the Pigeon looks directly at and speaks directly to your child, using all of the methods of pleading to get your little person to give in to letting him drive the bus that he/she might typically use to try to get his/her way with YOU (i.e."Please?", "I never get to do anything!", "How ''bout I give you five bucks?", "No fair!", etc.) The Pigeon finally resorts to throwing a physical and verbal tantrum... "LET ME DRIVE THE BUS!!!" and then sulks when he''s still not allowed to. The driver returns, thanks your child, and then it ends with a big semi-trailer arriving, the Pigeon eyeing it and saying, "Hey...", ready to begin the whole scenario again - as children will do!

This is a silly little book where it''ll be interesting to watch your child''s reaction to having the tables turned!

This one is still our favorite --but they are all well written and hold a child''s interest again and again, making it a great investment.

Mo Willems is probably the favorite author of our house. My daughter wants to be an author and illustrator (she’s young but so excited about his stories) and credits Mo Willems to be one of the main reasons she wants to be.

His books are funny, engaging, entertaining, and just long enough to have content without overwhelming our toddler.

If you’re on the fence about any Mo Willems books, just get them. You won’t regret it!!

I was introduced to Mo Willems by my girlfriend who simply loved his Pigeon series of books. Having noticed she had given up her copy as a present for her friends child, I surprised her by getting her a replacement. The books are a great size with bright, colourful illustrations. The stories are child and adult friendly and we both thoroughly enjoy getting the book out from time to time to flick through the pages and be amused by the characters. We are in our mid-thirties and I can simply say this book is not just for kids! I would say this is the best book in the ''Pigeon'' series but the others are worth a look too!

I bought this thinking it would be full of pigeons adventures driving a bus, but it''s just about a pigeon who does not get to drive a bus and keeps getting told no. I understand the concept (teaching kids they can''t have their own way all the time etc), but personally I prefer a more imaginative book where things can happen that would not happen usually i.e. a pigeon driving a bus! I am sure lots will love it, for me, no.

I have had this (along with "The Pigeon Wants a Puppy" and "Don''t Let The Pigeon Stay Up Late!") for quite a few months and even me - 28 years old at the time of typing - finds it amusing. Admittedly, there are some changes in wording from the US original that I was first made aware of (over on YouTube, being read out aloud by a then two year old girl - surely the definition of cute!) such as "five bucks" becoming "a fiver" which is understandable. Although I would have kept the line "It''s the middle of the day in China!" instead of the UK edition''s "It''s the middle of the day in Alaska!", just because a child may be more familiar with countries than specific states of America. Whilst there is some equivalence in terms of sound - it does occur to me that it is possibly a nod to being roughly the correct equivalent time, time zone wise, at bedtime for a child in the UK). It should also be pointed out that I experienced the original US edition first, which more than likely plays a part - you know, "the first version you see is the best" syndrome and all that... But anyway, I did buy this originally for me! I''m 28 and I get a kick out of it, especially putting on "the pigeon voice" whilst reading it aloud with children and even my girlfriend has found great delight in reading the Pigeon books (I''m keeping an eye on them so they don''t "mysteriously disappear"!). Little children, as others have found, love to get involved and feel as if the Pigeon is talking with them - especially telling the Pigeon he can''t do something makes them giggle all the more! So yes, despite my minor quibble, "Don''t Let The Pigeon Drive The Bus!" is well worth the five stars and, provided it doesn''t get ripped to shreds, will provide a great deal of laughter for all involved!

I bought this book for my daughters on the strength of reviews. When I received it and flicked through myself, I didn''t quite see what all the fuss was about. But immediately that I read it to my daughters, they were in hysterics. A story of a cheeky little pigeon that is desperately trying to convince you to let him drive the bus, while the bus driver has stepped away for a minute. There is a degree of audience participation required as the pigeon is talking to ''you''.... he''s often met with a loud ''NO'' in response in this house. Would highly recommend for big hearty laughs and calls of ''Again'' at the end of the story.
